Projects under the IBC typically require ADA-compliant handrails, including specific height (34”–38”), graspability, continuous runs, wall clearance, and stair extensions at the top and bottom.
The IRC applies to: • One- and two-family homes • Townhouses (three stories or less)
IRC requirements focus on basic safety standards such as height (34”–38”) and graspability. Full ADA compliance is generally not required for private residences.
Using the correct code ensures compliance, smooth inspections, and proper handrail selection for your project.
